Assistance Fund
The Military Family Assistance Fund is a program funded solely by donations and provides the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs to help veterans in need. The MFA board reviews applications that come into our department, and if the veteran meets the need-based criteria, they can receive up to $10,000 per year. This Fund can help with household bills, repairing a car that can help the veteran get to and from work, or keeping the veteran from being evicted or losing their house.
There are several ways to donate to the MFA Fund, including online, by mail, through the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles, and on your state tax return. To donate online, visit https://www.la.egov.com/dva/mfadonations/?fbclid=IwAR3yIrjnhRduWdS3V-dpVe05j95ursRi-ioOucJgTCXTDs-PsSxIBXmyOpU. To donate by mail, send your donation to Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs, Attn: MFA Administrator, P.O. Box 94095, Baton Rouge, LA 70804.
At the Office of Motor Vehicles, there are three ways to donate to the Fund. First, there is an option to donate $1 when you renew your driver’s license. Alternatively, if you are interested in a specialized license plate, $25 will go to the MFA Fund upon purchasing either the Support Our Veterans or the Support Our Troops license plates.
Finally, Louisianans have the opportunity to donate to the Fund on their state tax return. To do this, enter the desired amount of your refund on Line 2 of Schedule D on Form IT-540 for residents or Form IT-540B for non-residents. If you are not due a refund, you can still donate on Line 40 on Form IT-540 and include payment for the amount donated with your return. Businesses can also contribute to the Fund. Business owners can get more information by emailing veteran@la.gov.
