Dee Robinson Brave Heart, Children in Need

Brave Heart, Children in Need began in 2004 when a four year old girl was removed from her home and was taken into the foster care system.  The child had no shoes on her feet and cried inconsolably.  Many times when children are removed from their homes, they have nothing more than the clothes they are wearing.

Brave Heart, as a nonprofit organization, is focused on improving the quality of life for children who are experiencing the trauma of being removed from their homes due to abuse and/or neglect.  Brave Heart participates in many community projects and activities regarding the challenges facing Louisiana’s most vulnerable population – children in the foster care system.  We are inspired by the concept that tangible items can be a source of comfort and consistency for these children.  Ultimately, it is not about the contents of a backpack or gift bag but the idea of reassuring a child in crisis with a small ray of hope, encouragement and comfort.

Brave Heart works throughout the Louisiana Department of Children & Family Services to assist children that are put into foster care. Brave Heart began by helping one social worker and has grown to serve several thousand children throughout the state.

The children who are removed from their homes and enter the foster care system often have more obstacles and challenges to face in order to grow into healthy and productive adults. These children are a part of our community and as a community it is our responsibility to support them.
